LV Bears split district games

In what was a difficult week for the La Vernia baseball team, the Bears split district games with Navarro and Cuero.

The Bears hosted Navarro on April 7, and managed a 1-0 win. After 6-1/2 innings without a score, the Bears scratched 1 run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Kyle Kincaid led off the inning and ripped a double into left field. Dylan Tuten popped out, and Jacob Prater stepped up to the plate. With Zack Myrick in to run for Kincaid, Prater looked at a strike-one pitch. He then went in the hole after fouling off two pitches. Prater put the next pitch in play, though, driving a grounder into left field, and Myrick ran around for the score and the Bear victory.

La Vernia traveled to Cuero on April 10, but didn’t get the win on the road.

Cuero scored first in the bottom of the third inning, but the Bears responded in the top of the fourth with 3 runs of their own. Christian Bruce starting things off with a single into center field, and Austin Starks followed suit with a single into left. Tristan Gardner got ahold of a 2-0 pitch, and ripped a double into center, allowing Bruce to score the tying run.

Some mishaps on the bases cost La Vernia some potential runs, but Cole Lowry kept things going when he doubled into left. Kincaid singled to score Lowry, and the Bears led by 1. Colby Skelton and Tanner Sims each singled, and Kincaid ran around for run No. 3.

The Bears held Cuero through the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, and then added 2 runs in the top of the sixth as Skelton and Sims scored to give La Vernia a 5-1 lead.

Unfortunately for La Vernia, the proverbial wheels fell off in the bottom of the frame, as Cuero tallied hits, drew walks, and took advantage of Bear fielding errors. The Gobblers hung 7 runs on the board, and assumed an 8-5 lead.

The Bears did what they could in the top of the seventh, as Lowry and Kincaid got on base with one out. Skelton hit into a double play to end the run, and to give the Bears their first district loss of the season.

La Vernia was scheduled to host Wimberley on April 14, and will be at Canyon Lake next Tuesday, April 21.
