City OKs budget for new police vehicle
NANNETTE KILBEY-SMITH La Vernia City Council members (from left) Harold Schott, Jennifer Moczygemba, and Mark Doege visit before the April 9 council meeting.

The La Vernia City Council has amended its 2014-15 fiscal year budget to allow for the purchase of generators for a new municipal well and a new police vehicle, among other items.

Council members Marie Gerlich, Eloi Cormier, Harold Schott, Jennifer Moczygemba, and Mark Doege approved an ordinance to amend the budget during their April 9 regular meeting, following a mid-year budget review.

This will allow for a revised projected fund balance in the general fund of $693,613.44 and previously unfunded expenses of $50,000 for a new police car and $2,500 for police department computer. It also amends the projected utility fund balance to $473,934, to allow for unfunded expenditures of $75,000 for generators and $350 for new utility software.

The software will enable city utility customers to view their accounts, pay bills, and sign up for email reminders ...all online. Customers had been invited to sign up for ACH Automated Clearing House Network ...payments, a method for automatically transferring funds from a customer’s banking account to pay bills.

“Customers didn’t want to sign up for ACH,” City Administrator Yvonne Griffin told the council. “They don’t’ want the city to draw money from their accounts!”

Customers will feel more in control with the new software, she said.

In other business, the council:

¢Approved the city’s contribution of matching funds to the Floresville Electric Light & Power System’s 2015 summer youth program, $830

¢Approved keeping Wells Fargo as the city’s bank depository

¢Approved making appointments of a realtor and a member of the city’s extraterritorial jurisdiction individuals to be determined to the impact fee advisory committee

¢Agreed to request bids to obtain medical insurance broker services

¢Approved city sponsorship of a rest stop for the Greater La Vernia Chamber of Commerce Wild West Hammerfest in September

¢Approved exploring information to draft a proposed amendment to the city’s fee schedule, to require double building permit fees when work is begun on a project prior to permits being issued

¢Discussed the need for a fire plan review and inspection services; this will be revisited later, pending further information.

Yliana Flores of the San Antonio River Authority (SARA) also presented copies of a new publication, “Community & Nature Park Future Park Projects,” outlining proposed park amenities in Wilson County recreational areas, such as the Jackson Nature Park near Stockdale, the La Vernia City Park, and the Dewees-Remschel Historic Site near Poth, among others. Copies are available from SARA and at City Hall.
