La Vernia teams top Wimberley

La Vernia teams top Wimberley
LVISD La Vernia’s Rachel Goddard looks for the ball as she rounds first base during the Lady Bears’ 4-1 district win over Wimberley.

Things generally get heated up when La Vernia and Wimberley play each other, but the Bear baseball and Lady Bear softball teams had no trouble with the Texans and Lady Texans last week, as they rolled to a pair of wins.

In softball action, Wimberley struck first in the top of the third inning, as the Lady Texans scratched 1 run. The Lady Bears came back in the bottom of the frame to tie things up, though. Ali Saenz was hit by a pitch to get on base, and then Kara Myrick put down a bunt to move Saenz around the bases. Renee Cummings then hit a sacrifice fly to score Saenz.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, La Vernia added another run to the board. Cummings singled to start things off, and Taylor Spoo came into run. Corley Carpenter then singled into right field to move Spoo around. She scored on a sacrifice fly from Annie Roswell.

In the bottom of the sixth inning the Lady Bears added 2 more runs en route to their 4-1 victory. Rachel Goddard singled to left, and Marisa Hernandez doubled to left. Goddard later scored on an error, and Hernandez scored when Myrick put the ball in play to the short stop. In the end, it was another all-important district win for the Lady Bears.

In baseball action, the Texans went into a hole early and the Bears never let them climb back into the game.

La Vernia quickly retired the side as Wimberley only sent four batters to the plate in the top of the first. The Bears came out of the gates swinging in the bottom of the frame, and hung 2 runs on the board. Colton Parrish singled to center field to start things off, and Christian Bruce drew a walk. Colby Skelton singled and later scored in the bottom of the second inning to give the Bears a 3-0 lead.

Things settled down a bit from there, but in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bears let loose for another 4 runs.

Hits from Parrish, Tristan Gardner, and Kyle Kincaid, along with a bunt from Tanner Sims and walks for Bruce and Cole Lowry led to the 4-run inning. When the Texans finally retired the side, it was a 7-0 lead for the Bears. That score would prove final.

Both teams were scheduled to face Canyon Lake this week, and the Bears were also on the books to battle with Yoakum. As the district seasons wind to a close, both teams should be in position to challenge in the postseason.
