Lady Bears win district title

Lady Bears win district title
LVISD Renee Cummings delivers a pitch during a recent district softball game. The Lady Bears won the district title, and will begin playoff competition later this week.

With a 9-5 win over Canyon Lake last week, the La Vernia Lady Bear softball team completed the district season. The girls finished with a 9-3 district record, and are once again the district champs.

Against Canyon Lake, the Lady Bears started applying pressure in the top of the first inning. Ali Saenz led off with a triple into right field, and then scored two batters later as Renee Cummings put a bunt in play to bring Saenz home. The Lady Bears nearly batted around in the inning, but weren’t able to add any additional runs to the board.

In the top of the second inning, Rachel Goddard got things started as she drew a lead-off walk. Saenz hit one out toward center field, and safely reached base on a fielding error. Goddard moved around third, and made her way around to home for a 2-0 La Vernia lead. The fielding errors actually allowed Saenz to land safely at third, and she later scored as Kara Myrick hit a single into center field.

With a 3-0 lead, the Lady Bears went back to work in the top of the third inning, and added another run. Addison Dennis hit a double into center field, moved over to third on a Goddard single to left field, and then scored on a Canyon Lake fielding error.

La Vernia added 3 more runs in the top of the fourth inning, as Myrick, Kailee Wegehaupt, and pinch runner Chesney Halsey all scored for a 7-0 lead.

The Lady Hawks scratched 2 runs in the bottom of the fourth, and another 3 runs in the fifth, but still trailed 7-5 as the teams moved into the sixth inning of play. Neither kept the scoreboard operator working in the sixth, but La Vernia got things moving again in the top of the seventh inning.

Marisa Hernandez started things off as she put the ball in play and reached base on a fielding error. Bailey Caldwell came in to run, and Saenz stepped up to the plate. Saenz singled into right field, but another Canyon Lake error allowed Caldwell to roll around for the score, and Saenz ended up safely at third base. A wild pitch allowed Saenz to score, and the Lady Bears led 9-5 when the side was finally retired.

The Lady Hawks had one more at-bat in the bottom of the frame, but good fielding by the Lady Bears led to a three-up three-down inning for Canyon Lake, and the game ended with a 9-5 victory for La Vernia.

The Lady Bears now advance to postseason play, and will begin with a bi-district matchup against Salado. It will be a best-of-three series, beginning Friday, May 1, at 6 p.m. Game two will be Saturday, May 2, at 4 p.m. If a third game is needed, it will be played 30 minutes after the conclusion of game two. All games will be played at Wimberley High School.
