Meet the candidates

Meet the candidates seeking your vote in the May 9 La Vernia ISD school board election. Place 5 is the only contested race.

Candidates were invited to submit their own, individualized 200-word message to voters, and outline some of the things they’d like to achieve in the office they seek, if successful in their election efforts.

Early voting is under way; please see information on page 1A for places, times, and venues for casting ballots in this important local election.

Dr. David W. Cribb

I retired as a U.S.A.F. colonel with 30 years on active duty in 2011. With two children in high school, we returned to this area because of the outstanding high school, a small-town atmosphere, and one of the best cross-country programs in the state.

I believe the skills that I have been blessed with would be a good match for the board. I have previous board experience serving as a board member and chairman of the board of Air Academy Credit Union in Colorado Springs. I taught on the faculty of the Air Force Academy for over nine years and hold an earned doctorate in mathematical sciences as well as five years’ experience as a dean at a nationally ranked graduate school.

I am actively involved at the high school as an assistant with the cross-country team, a volunteer at the concession stands, and work with the sports association.

I believe two of the biggest challenges facing our district are budget difficulties in our current economy and steady growth in our student population. With my experience and education, we can accomplish critical planning to meet future challenges and provide the best possible education for our children.

Darla Elenbaas

My name is Darla Elenbaas and I am a candidate for La Vernia ISD board of trustees. I have spent the past 10 years volunteering in schools at every level and have witnessed how hard our teachers and students work. I would like to find a way to better support their efforts and get away from the pressures involved in our current standardized tests. I would also like to create more course selection so that all of our students can recognize their individual talents and go on to the careers they are meant to have.

I will be an accessible advocate for all students, parents, and teachers. I will work hard and dedicate my time to thorough research for every decision put before me. I am of the strong belief that my service is “not about me,” but is about who I am serving. Please vote for me.
