La Vernia man, son among those hurt in crash
Wrecker operators prepare two damaged vehicles for transport after a head-on crash May 7 on U.S. 87 in La Vernia.

LA VERNIA -- Darryl Dukes, 33, of La Vernia remains in University Hospital in San Antonio as of press time May 12, following a head-on crash on U.S. 87 in front of the La Vernia Chamber of Commerce Hall five days earlier. A hospital spokesman said his condition had been upgraded to stable.

Dukes and his 4-year-old son -- for whom a condition could not be released without parental consent -- were among four victims flown via AirLife helicopter to University Hospital after the crash that occurred at approximately 4:20 p.m. May 7. According to a report by Officer Donald Keil of the La Vernia Police Department, preliminary indications are Dukes was driving northbound on U.S. 87 in a Chevrolet Suburban, which crossed the centerline and collided with a Ford E-350 van belonging to Thomas West Fuels that was traveling southbound.

The driver of the van -- 30-year-old Thomas Gutierrez -- and a passenger, 23-year-old Devon Thompson, were flown to University Hospital. Two other passengers, 54-year-old Albert Santillano and 34-year-old Ricardo Prieto, were transported via ambulance to Mission Trail Baptist Hospital in San Antonio. Spokesmen at the respective hospitals had no further information.

Personnel from the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol, New Berlin Volunteer Fire Department, and ambulance crews from La Vernia, Eagle Creek, and Wilson County assisted La Vernia police officers at the scene.
