Wilson County cities vie to be YMCA site

The market study to determine whether a new YMCA will be in La Vernia or Floresville may soon have the funds to begin.

YMCA of Greater San Antonio wants FourSquare Research Inc. to conduct the study, which will cost $20,000.

Floresville Economic Development Corp. (FEDC) members at their May 11 meeting took a position in favor of paying half the study’s cost. However, they deferred to the Floresville City Council to approve the expenditure.

The La Vernia Municipal Development District (MDD) already has committed $10,000 for the study.

“A lot of people in La Vernia have expressed interest in having a YMCA,” MDD Vice President Jennifer Moczygemba said. “It would be a success, because they would be there often.”

The YMCA currently provides an after-school program for the La Vernia Independent School District.

Unlike the MDD, whose membership comprises the members of the La Vernia City Council, except for the mayor, the FEDC operates as a board responsible to the Floresville City Council.

“I think we sit in a nice position [to get the YMCA],” FEDC President Ray Lamberth said. He explained that Floresville provides a more central location in the county and has many needs a YMCA can address.
