WILLIAM J. GIBBS JR. Citizens pack the La Vernia Primary School cafetorium for the Oct. 17 meeting of the La Vernia Independent School District board of trustees.

School board meetings, especially on Monday nights, rarely draw crowds. But the cafetorium in the La Vernia Primary School was packed for the Oct. 17 meeting of the La Vernia Independent School District (ISD) board of trustees, as members of the community weighed in on an ongoing investigation into the La Vernia Junior High School Activity Account.

Among those to speak was Jennifer Moczygemba, who asked board members Richard Schier, Mike Jendrusch, John Bilicek, Janice Gimbel, David Watson, James Barnett, and Eric Friedrichs about a perceived lack of accountability. Moczygemba alleges that the account ran a negative balance for two years, and that no one attempted to research the issue, even when concerns were raised.

La Vernia ISD informed junior high school parents Oct. 12 that a criminal investigation into expenditures from the activity fund was ongoing. Sgt. Bruce Ritchey of the La Vernia Police Department is heading up the probe, and said a forensic audit is under way.

Moczygemba advised those in attendance to become active participants in the school board, citing at least three consecutive election cycles in which candidates ran unopposed. She also cautioned citizens not to believe the rumors circulating in the community, but to seek out the facts for themselves.

Also during the meeting, the board voted to:

•Accept a $500 donation from the La Vernia Lions Club, which will be used to purchase diabetes supplies.

•Voted to hire Sandra Thornton to work as a counselor at the La Vernia Junior High
School.

•Voted to hire five new teachers -- one special education teacher each for the La Vernia Junior High School and La Vernia Intermediate School, and three teachers for the La Vernia Primary School.
