Libraries receive grant to support summer literacy

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded the Wilson County Public Libraries a $2,000 grant to support summer literacy.

Wilson County Public Libraries will be expanding their “Books and Bots” pro-gram during the summer to include activities in both Floresville and Stockdale. Children will build robots and learn how to code in order to make the robots move and do a variety of activities. At the same time, children will be exposed to a variety of literature to inspire their robotic creations.

Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $100 million in grants to non-profit organizations helping nearly 6 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.

Wilson County Public Libraries serves a population of 45,418 people in 809 square miles with 20,115 active cardholders. Currently there are three branches: Sam Fore Jr. Public Library in Floresville, Sarah Bain Chandler Public Library in Stockdale, and The Poth Branch in Poth. There is also a Book Kiosk at the H-E-B in La Vernia and a Book Swap at the La Vernia News office. Find the branches on Facebook.
