City gets a fresh, young take on the future

The latest advisory group in the city of La Vernia has a fresh, young look.

That’s because its members are, well, young!

During the June 11 La Vernia City Council meeting, City Administrator Yvonne Griffin introduced city officials to members of the La Vernia Youth Advisory Council. Landon Collins, the group’s community affairs advisor, and Media Advisor Maura Jones attended.

Collins shared the group’s mission statement with the city’s elected representatives: “As the Youth Advisory Council of La Vernia, our mission is to be the bridge that links the youth in our community to our city government by discussing issues of concern and possible solutions, as well as future accomplishments we wish to achieve.” The advisory council’s goals are:

¢To establish its presence in La Vernia

¢Make a positive impact on the community

¢Set an example for the youth of the community, as well as future generations.

Members plan to participate in various events and fund-raisers, such as nursing home visits, National Night Out, La Vernia Wild West Hammerfest, and more.

Mayor Robert Gregory advised the council that members of the Youth Advisory Council will attend future council meetings and events, and commended the group.

“Our generations coming up are made up of fine young adults,” he said. “Cherish and learn from [this experience].”
