Council sets voting times, places

Voters here weighing in on the streets-maintenance tax in La Vernia and the proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution will cast ballots on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8, in the La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department on U.S. 87, and not in City Hall as previously discussed. The decision was made during a brief La Vernia City Council meeting Oct. 20 at 9 a.m.

The only agenda items were approval of the ordinance calling for the election and outlining specifics, such as polling locations and times, and consideration of the minutes from the council’s Sept. 19 meeting. Both received approval.

See below for election details.

By Harold Schott

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8, for citizens to vote to re-authorize the 1/4-cent existing tax for the maintenance and repair of streets in the city limits of La Vernia.

This is not a new tax. Voters approved a 1-cent sales-tax increase in November 2007 with 1/4-cent dedicated solely to the repair and maintenance of streets. This 1/4-cent sales tax must, by law, be re-authorized every four years.

This tax allows everyone who shops in La Vernia, regardless of where they live, to help support this dedicated fund to help maintain the streets they use daily. Please vote.

Early voting continues through Friday, Nov. 4, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the La Vernia City Hall. Extended hours will be offered Nov. 1-2, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Election Day voting Tuesday, Nov. 8, will take place at the La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department, 12190 U.S. 87 W., from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Harold Schott is mayor of La Vernia.
