It was a great run for the La Vernia Little League Juniors All-Star baseball team this season, but things came to an end for the District 31 champs this past Monday when they fell in sectionals by a score of 2-1.

The team made a great run through the district tournament and knocked off New Braunfels to win the West, and then downed Shiner to grab the district crown. Through six district games, the team averaged 14 runs per game.

With the district championship under its belt, the team advanced to the sectionals. The Juniors took on Victoria East in the first game, and notched an 11-4 victory. La Vernia squared off with Needville next, but suffered a 17-7 loss.

The loss to Needville put La Vernia into a rematch with Victoria East, and the local team came through with a 12-5 win, thereby eliminating Victoria East. The win put La Vernia into a rematch with Needville. Because it is a double-elimination tournament, La Vernia would have to defeat Needville twice in a row to win sectionals and advance to state.

The boys from La Vernia gave it their best shot on July 13, but came up a little short by the final score of 2-1. That ended their season, but it was certainly a success, and the coaches were thrilled with the kids’ efforts.

Team members are Jimmy Elrod, Joshua Ruiz, Zane Landin, Clay Richards, Nathan Lambert, Keegan Holm, Garrett Landin, Tyler Casey, Wesley “Trey” Johns, Luke Lytle, Dylan Pennell, Timmy Albarez, Rocky Canales, and Dawson Friederick. The team manager is Jim Elrod, and the coaches are John Landin and Morgan Holm.
