Judo fighters excel in Corpus Christi tourney
Jonathan Stafford (left) and John Gill commemorate their time at the Bushido Judo Tournament in Corpus Christi. Gill won the Masters division, while Stafford finished second in the Open division. Both fighters represented the Ronin Dojo of La Vernia.

During the Bushido Judo Tournament held June 18 in Corpus Christi, John Gill, a judo black belt, represented the Ronin Dojo of La Vernia quite well.

Gill fought in the Masters division and took home first-place honors after dominating and winning four straight matches. Gill also competed in the Senior division, and had a very strong performance to finish third. Then, to top it all off, Gill fought an exhibition match against a heavyweight opponent and won with a powerful throw. In all, Gill won a total of seven fights in one day a very impressive feat.

Also competing in the tournament was Jonathan Stafford of Stockdale. Stafford fought in the Open weight division (unlimited weight, no weight classes) and finished in second place. Stafford weighed in at 137 pounds, and stormed into the finals against much bigger opponents. In a close finals match, he was edged out by an opponent who outweighed him by 40 pounds.

Gill and Stafford train regularly with Bain Serna at the Ronin Dojo in La Vernia.
