China Grove chase ends in La Vernia
Traffic slows at the intersection of U.S. 87 and F.M. 775 in La Vernia July 18 as officers from various area agencies complete their investigation following a police pursuit that started in China Grove and ended with the suspect’s arrest.

James Edward Cheatham, 33, of San Antonio is free on bond awaiting consideration of his case by a grand jury following his July 18 arrest in La Vernia, according to Wilson County Jail records. According to Officer Anthony Martinez of the China Grove Police Department, Cheatham is charged with evading arrest or detention, criminal mischief, and a host of traffic violations.

Martinez said that at 9:28 a.m., his patrol car was parked on the inside shoulder of U.S. 87 East in China Grove, with its emergency lights active while the officer assisted a stranded motorist. While Martinez and the motorist were outside the vehicle, Cheatham allegedly almost struck the pair as they stood on the shoulder of the highway. Martinez said he got into his vehicle and pursued Cheatham, who was headed toward Wilson County at speeds that reached 100 mph.

Cheatham was apprehended in La Vernia at the intersection of U.S. 87 and F.M. 775 with the assistance of Wilson County Constable Pct. 3 George Scoggins, deputies from the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, and an officer from the La Vernia Police Department. The suspect was transported to the Wilson County Jail.
