Texas team wins Little League regional
Members of the South Garland Big League baseball team celebrate their regional championship after winning a week-long tournament in La Vernia last week. The Texas team will now advance to the Big League Baseball World Series in South Carolina.

In an exciting Little League tournament held last week in La Vernia, the Big League division baseball team from South Garland knocked off the team from South Lake Charles, La., to advance to the 2015 Big League Baseball World Series.

La Vernia played host to the regional tournament, and Seguin won the rights to represent District 31. Joining the battle for a trip to the World Series in South Carolina were teams from Aurora, Colo.; Albuquerque, N.M.; Montgomery, Texas; and South Lake Charles and South Garland.

The team from Louisiana expressed its early dominance, winning the first game 10-0 over Seguin. On the second day, South Lake Charles defeated the team from New Mexico, 21-0. Meanwhile, South Garland earned a 10-3 win over the team from Montgomery, and was put into a late game with South Lake Charles on the third day of competition. The Louisiana boys got the best of South Garland, though, winning 8-6 for a pass straight into the championship.

The Montgomery team took on Colorado in a Day 1 rematch, and once again came out on top, 17-5. That put the Montgomery and South Garland in a rematch for a chance to play in the title game. It was a close contest, but in the end, South Garland earned a 15-14 win.

The championship pitted South Lake Charles and South Garland against each other, but South Lake Charles had the advantage. In the double-elimination tournament, the team from Louisiana remained unbeaten. For the Texas team to win the crown, it would need a pair of victories over South Lake Charles. One win for Louisiana, however, meant a trip to the World Series.

The first game was a true nail-biter for both squads, but in the end, it was South Garland winding up on top with a 7-6 victory. The Texas-sized victory gave each team a single tournament loss, and the tournament rules required one final game to decide the championship. It was another good battle in game two, but the momentum was with South Garland, and the team rolled to a 12-7 victory and a regional championship. It also earned the North Texas team a trip to Easley, S.C., for the Big League Baseball World Series.

Good luck, South Garland!
