’Pressure breaks pipes or makes diamonds’

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation, if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort (1 Corinthians 1:3-7).

Paul is writing to the church at Corinth and sharing his words of comfort in times of trouble. When problems enter our lives, we have a big decision. What will these troubles produce? Will they bring comfort as we seek the Lord? Or will they cause additional problems as we reject God’s perfect word and our trust in God suffers? There is a saying that says, “Pressure breaks pipes or makes diamonds.” What can this mean in our daily lives?

As we have had a cold winter this year, there have been times that we have had to protect the water pipes and the plants from the freezing temperatures. The pressure of the cold could break the pipes and kill the plants so it was necessary to take precautions. In our lives, do we have problems that need protection? Can we take these to the Lord and trust Him? Sometimes that is easier than other times, but we need always to look to God and claim His protection from the “pressure.” The rest of the slogan above says that pressure also makes diamonds. Which would we rather have in our lives, broken pipes or diamonds?

The scripture above says that we all have problems and need to learn from them and to be comforted (make diamonds) and to share that comfort with others. We always need to turn to Jesus and seek Him in our problems and turn them to Him. How can we do that? We can look to His word and claim His words in our lives. Sometimes we need to share our problems and put them on the prayer request list, asking others to pray with us as we seek God’s will in that particular problem. And sometimes when we hear a prayer request and we have been down that road, we need to pray especially for that need and if the Lord directs, work with that person and help them in their direction to God and His redeeming love.

Let’s always seek to make “diamonds” from our problems and trials and turn to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in our every need, in our every day. Let’s always turn to Him! Remember, pressure breaks pipes or makes diamonds. Which should we choose?
