Bears begin work under new head coach
LVISD Members of the Bear football team square off with one another during two-a-days. The Bears began football workouts on Aug. 3, and will play their first game of the season on Aug. 28.

For nearly two weeks now, the La Vernia High School Bear football team has been back at work. It’s the start of a new season, and the start of a new era, as Brandon Layne takes over as head coach and athletic director.

Layne has actually been with the district since April, and has spent the past few months preparing for this season. He is excited to be in La Vernia, and the community has embraced him.

“Everyone is excited and on board,” said Kari Ring, the La Vernia Independent School District public relation coordinator.

Layne came to La Vernia with an impressive résumé, having served as the offensive coordinator for Ennis High School. While at Ennis, Layne helped lead the Lions to a thrilling 38-35 win over Cedar Park for the 2014 Class 5A DII state championship.

Layne is introducing a number of offensive changes for the Bears in 2015, including the use of a multiple-formation, pro-style offense. Joe Volentine will serve as his offensive coordinator, and veteran Bears Coach Chris Taylor will call the shots for the defense.

The Bears will continue preparing for the season throughout the month of August. La Vernia will scrimmage Floresville this Saturday, Aug. 15 in Floresville, and will be at home for a scrimmage against Boerne on Friday, Aug. 21. The Bears will play their first game of the 2015 season on Friday, Aug. 28, as they host the Wimberley Texans. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
