Texas VFW confirms directory is legitimate
The email image shown is the one that raised concerns with area residents.

When H.R. Grimm received an email asking him to verify his identification with the Texas VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars), he was hesitant.

“After years of Army cyber awareness training, the email I received stating it was from Mr. West with VFW, and it providing a different email, fit the pattern of phishing,” Grimm said. “I felt uncomfortable with the return email address. That’s why it looked bogus.”

After hearing concerns, the newspaper reached out to the Texas VFW and State Commander Dan West. He said that everything is legitimate.

“Publishing Concepts, Incorporated (PCI) was hired by the Texas VFW to do a then and now roster book for the Texas VFW,” West said. “This is not something they just decided to do. They have been hired by us.”

West said the project has the approval of the Department Council of Administration and the National VFW. Information about the project was disseminated through the VFW’s chain of command to all posts in Texas. West maintained that the contracted company is prohibited from keeping any of the information it verifies or collects, as everything is to be directed to the Texas VFW.

PCI has been in business for more than 30 years and specializes in college alumni books, said West, as well as books for military associations, such as the Purple Hearts, Marine Corps League, and the Air Force Association.
