Cyclists greet the cameras with waves and cheers at a previous La Vernia Wild West Hammerfest Bicycle Ride.

The Greater La Vernia Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for the eighth annual La Vernia Wild West Hammerfest Bicycle Ride set for Saturday, Sept. 12, at 8 a.m. in the La Vernia City Park.

Riders can choose from routes of 39, 57, or 69 miles, or a 2-mile family ride that will take riders through Wilson, Bexar, and Guadalupe counties. Safety and emergency personnel will protect the riders, and rest stops will be scattered throughout the course. Support and gear teams will also assist with bicycle problems.

New to the Hammerfest this year is an H-E-B KidZone and Bike Rodeo for kids ages 5 to 10. Gates open for the KidZone at 9:30 a.m. and the Bike Rodeo will begin at 10 a.m. Music, food, vendors, and fun will reign in the park all the day.

Registration fees start at $35 for individuals, with discounts for active duty military and veterans, families, and children under 15 years old. Twenty percent of the proceeds will benefit the La Vernia Veterans Memorial Project, which will be constructed at the La Vernia City Park.

“We’re so proud that Hammerfest has grown into an area favorite for avid cyclists, amateur riders, and families alike,” said Wes Becknell, Greater La Vernia Chamber of Commerce president. “We can’t wait to show off our small town of La Vernia, while supporting our local businesses and veterans.”

Preregistration is recommended for the three long routes; however, day-of registration will be accepted. Parents must pre-register their child online for the Bike Rodeo.

The public is welcome and parking and admission to the City Park are free. Hammerfest is a Bike MS Valero Ride to the River Recommended Ride.
