The making of ’Part 2’

I recently watched the TV film, “Killing Jesus,” based on the book by Bill O’Reilly.

Based on the Gospels and historical information, the film was graphic in parts, but was presented in a very matter-of-fact manner.

I watched with a loved one, and we were completely engrossed in the story.

As the credits rolled we sat in silence. Then my fellow viewer said, “Wow! Now we need a Part 2 of this!”

I thought about that for a moment, and it dawned on me.

We have Part 2.

We are “Part 2.”

In the movie, Jesus asked his apostles, after the death of John the Baptist, “Who do people say that I am?” Responses varied Elijah, perhaps, or maybe a prophet.

“But who do you say that I am?” he asked.

After a somewhat uncomfortable silence, Simon stepped up.

“You are the Anointed One, the Son of the Living God,” he stated.

Knowing God had inspired this faith and certainty in his friend, this fisherman, Jesus proclaimed, “I will call you Peter, and upon this rock, I will build my church.”

Simon wasn’t sure he was a rock. He wasn’t sure of anything. Except one thing. Jesus was the Messiah.

He went on to deny knowing Jesus as the authorities arrested the itinerant preacher and miracle-worker.

Yet he remained certain that Jesus was the Christ.

And following Jesus’ resurrection, Simon Peter became the Rock Jesus had known he would be.

Because he did, there is a Part 2 to this story. Despite his doubts in himself and his abilities, Simon Peter shared his faith, and proclaimed the Good News. St. Peter is Part 2.

He must have thought, a thousand times, “I don’t think I can. What if I fail?”

I’m pretty sure St. Peter’s choices didn’t all turn out rosy for the fledgling church. But we know he persisted.

And Part 2 is you and me, sharing our faith, and proclaiming the Good News. Despite our doubts in ourselves and our abilities.

There is a Part 2.

And because we share our faith and proclaim the Good News, we know there’s another part to the story.

The best is yet to come.
