Lady Bears top Cuero, fall in Wimberley
LVHS 2015 Volleyball Senior Mackinley Zimmerle (5) tallies a kill during the Lady Bears’ Sept. 22 district win over Cuero. Zimmerle led the team with 18 kills on the night.

Just about halfway through the first round of district play, the La Vernia Lady Bear volleyball team is sitting on a 3-2 record in 26-4A, and is currently in fourth place.

The Lady Bears started district play off well with straight-games wins over Yoakum and Gonzales. La Vernia then fell to Navarro, to put the team at 2-1. Last week, the girls were on the road for two more district games, taking on Cuero and Wimberley.

In Cuero, it was a tight match with the Lady Gobblers, but the Lady Bears earned the win in four games. It came down to the wire in the first game, but the Lady Bears held on for a 25-23 win. Cuero stormed back in the second to steal a 25-17 victory, but the Lady Bears refocused their efforts and won the third and fourth games, 25-21 and 25-19.

Mackinley Zimmerle led the attack with 18 kills, followed by Hayli Verrips with 12 kills and Kennedy Adams with another 7. Morgan Burns tallied a whopping 41 assists, Christa Reyes led the team with 11 digs, and Zimmerle had 3.5 blocks at the net.

On Sept. 25, the Lady Bears took on the Lady Texans in Wimberley. The host team jumped out to a big 25-16 win in the first game, but the Lady Bears came back to win games two and three, 25-21 and 26-24. Wimberley locked up the fourth game with a 25-22 win, tying the match at two games apiece. The fifth game was a race to 15, but extra points were needed. In the end, the Lady Texans held on for a 16-14 win to take the match.

Zimmerle once again led the attack with 16 kills, and Burns racked up 44 assists. Reyes had 20 digs, and Zimmerley and Adams each had three blocks at the net.

La Vernia had a non-district match scheduled for Sept. 29, but will resume District 26-4A play this Friday, Oct. 2, as the Lady Bears travel to Canyon Lake to play the first-place Lady Hawks.
