Boehner’s gone, but not soon enough

Headline from

http://www.reuters.com“U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner will leave Congress at the end of October after struggling with repeated rebellions by conservatives during a tumultuous five-year reign as the chamber’s top Republican.”

Between the Lines

While many conservatives cheered at the news that Boehner was stepping down, the damage has been done.

His likely replacement, U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, 50, of California, may be no better, and perhaps even worse, than Boehner. He talks about bringing both sides together.

The problem with this kind of talk is that voters no longer trust elected politicians. When Ronald Reagan talked about “bringing both sides together,” it was under his strong leadership and it meant that there would be real compromise on both sides.

What we have seen with this administration, however, is all one-sided. When this president talks of compromise, he means he’s made up his mind and expects everyone else to agree with him. That’s not compromise. It’s dictatorship.

“... Boehner is strongly pro-life and has overseen the passage of legislation to ban abortions after 20 weeks and to defund Planned Parent- hood, ... .”

Between the Lines

Actions speak louder than words.

Boehner has said in interviews that he believes that it was his duty as speaker to protect “the institution,” whatever that means. Now, after posing in photos with the Pope last week, Boehner is happy to step aside, but what has he really accomplished?

Nothing has happened to further the pro-life movement under this speaker. Anything they pass is subject to the president’s veto, so they just don’t pass anything with teeth. It’s been the same political theater for which Washington has become known, so it’s hard to understand Boehner’s support from some pro-life groups.

“This bill is provisionally dead due to a failed vote for cloture on September 22, 2015.”

Between the Lines

This refers to the “Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.” The fact that Congress cannot even agree on a bill that stops infanticide, selling of baby parts, or painful procedures that end human life does not speak well for our country.

Congress has been debating these same issues for years and still cannot get meaningful legislation passed.

It’s still just talk and political theater.

John Boehner never had any intention of seeing the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act pass, nor of defunding Planned Parenthood. He is going out with that same smug look on this face and declaring that his tenure as speaker was a success.

Elected officials like to boast that they have cast so many votes one way or the other, but in the end, no action is taken.

As Ted Cruz points out in his book, they come up with elaborate schemes that allow certain legislators to cast votes one way or the other because it looks good on their records. But even as they vote, they know full well that nothing will happen.

This is why voters are looking to nonpoliticians such as Donald Trump, Ben Carson, and Carly Fiorina. Let’s get a fresh start in Washington.
