Honor your veteran in Veterans Memorial

Honor your veteran in Veterans Memorial
A designed image shows the La Vernia Veterans Memorial to be constructed in the La Vernia City Park.

Now is the time to honor your favorite veterans on the La Vernia Veterans Memorial before prices increase in 2016. Names will be etched on the monument, which is nearing groundbreaking by the La Vernia Historical Association at the La Vernia City Park. The cost is $50 per name but the price will in-crease to $150 next year due to engraver costs.

The monument will have five walls, representing the five branches of military service, on which the names of veterans will be etched. Qualified veterans include not only those living in or near La Vernia but those who have family or friends in La Vernia, are previous residents, have fond memories of La Vernia, or simply have a part of their heart there. Veterans must have completed their term of service and be honorably discharged. Veterans who served during earlier time periods, such as the Civil War, are also eligible, with documentation.

Additionally, there are many opportunities to sup-port the monument, such as purchasing personalized paver bricks for placement along the Patriot’s Pathway. Not only veterans but companies, families, memories, anniversaries, groups, and more may have their name engraved on bricks to show their support of our veterans. The cost of bricks be-gins at $60. Supporters are also invited to have veterans’ names engraved on any of the 10 benches surrounding the monument, at a cost of $2,500 per name.

A 20-foot tall obelisk will artistically display the United States flag in a unique architectural feature at the center of the monument. Sponsors of this feature and major contributors will be recognized on a special commemorative marker at the site. Sponsor inquiries are invited by contacting the La Vernia Veterans Memorial Board at 210-392-3281.

On Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, a special ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at the site in the La Vernia City Park to honor all veterans. The public is invited.

The monument is a project of the La Vernia Historical Association and will be constructed in phases. Brochures are available at the La Vernia Heritage Museum, the La Vernia News, Sue’s Antiques, and the La Vernia Mill. All requests for engraving must be sub-mitted on required forms available at LaVerniaHisto-ry.com.
