Cross-country teams sweep at district meet
La Vernia varsity boys cross-county team — District 26-4A Champions

La Vernia High School made its presence known at the District 26-4A cross-country meet this past Monday, sweeping all four divisions of the competition to win four district titles.

The district championships were held at Starcke Park in Seguin, and the varsity squads will now advance to the regional meet set for next Monday, Oct. 26, at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. The varsity boys will enter the Region IV Championships with a record of 68-3, while the girls boast a record of 55-10.

In varsity boys competition at the district meet, Tate Gregory led the Bears with his overall first-place finish in a time of 16:35 -- 8 full seconds ahead of the second-place finisher from Wimberley. In third through sixth places were four more La Vernia runners, including Aubrey Steward, Gage Brandt, Bobby Gonzalez, and Landon Collins, respectively. Josh Krueger finished 10th, and Ryel Leija was 13th. All runners earned individual medals, as well as the team championship.

On the girls’ side, Allison Newburg and Dakota Guerrero led the Lady Bears to a district title with their one-two finish. Newburg was first with a time 12:29, and Guerrero was 3 seconds back at 12:32. Runners from Cuero, Wimberley, and Navarro grabbed spots three through five, and La Vernia’s Hannah Lorton was sixth in a time of 13 minutes flat. Isabel De La Fuente finished eighth, Amber Thompson was 22nd, Mackenzie Crown was 29th, and Elizabeth Moczygemba finished in 33rd place.

In junior varsity competition, John Wolf took home silver with his second-place finish, and Ricky Guzman, Jeremy Lestourgeon, and Derrick Goddard finished fourth, fifth, and sixth. Hunter Skryski was 10th and Lee Roy Morales was 25th.

The junior varsity girls dominated their division, as the Lady Bears locked up six of the top seven spots. Annie Dirks and Jessica Schroeder finished first and second, while a runner from Wimberley snuck in for third place. Spots four through seven went to Gisselle Valero, Sabina Schwab, Emily Parnell, and Naielle Mendoza, respectively. Elizabeth Weaver rounded things out with a medal-earning finish of 13th.

In addition to the high school titles, the junior high eighth-grade girls and seventh-grade boys also won district championships. Braeden Denson won gold in the seventh-grade boys division, and other medalists were Mason Roberts in fifth, Matthew Miller in seventh place, and Dylan Armstrong in eight. Victoria Parnell medaled with a ninth-place finish in the seventh-grade girls division.

In eighth-grade competition, Natalie Hernandez led the Lady Bears to their district title with a fifth-place finish, and Isabelle Chamberlain had a ninth-place finish.
