LV BOOSTER CLUB Senior defender Matthew Montgomery (44) delivers a textbook hit on the Gonzales quarterback during the Bears’ 17-0 win over the Apaches last Friday night.

La Vernia 17

Gonzales 0

With a solid 17-0 win over the Gonzales Apaches last Friday night, the La Vernia Bears stayed perfect in District 15-4A DI play. With just two games remaining in the regular season, the Bears are on track to make a run into the postseason.

La Vernia didn’t blow out the Apaches on Oct. 23, but the Bears scored 17 points while holding the Apaches scoreless through all four quarters of play.

The first La Vernia score of the night came off the foot of Miguel De La Torre, as he booted a field goal in the first quarter to give the Bears a 3-0 lead.

In the second quarter of play, Christian Bruce found the end zone for the Bears, and De La Torre added the extra point to give La Vernia a 10-0 lead -- an advantage they would carry into the locker room at halftime.

The Bears were unable to add to their score in the third quarter of play, but the La Vernia defense continued to hold Gonzales at bay. The Bear offense got going again in the fourth quarter of the game, though, and Wyatt Cowsert ran one in for La Vernia, leading to the final score of 17-0.

Quarterback Garrett Spencer completed just one of four passing attempts, and it was good to Bruce for 9 yards. On the ground, Reagan Tucker led the offensive effort with 163 yards on 30 carries. Bruce ran 10 times for 73 yards and a touchdown, and Cowsert had 54 yards and a touchdown on his 10 carries.

On the defensive end, a host of Bears contributed to the shut out. Koby Bullard led the way with 11 tackles, followed by Matthew Montgomery with five tackles, including one for a loss, and two hurries. Samuel Thompson had six tackles and a defended pass, and Nathan Muehe added another 5 tackles. Jaymee Burns ended the night with four tackles, one for a loss, and one defended pass; Cole Simpson had three tackles and an interception with a 5-yard return; and Cody Martinez also had three tackles. Robert Olivarez and Alex Ibarra each had a pair of tackles. Also getting in on the mix to register tackles were Dustin Norman, John Hernandez, Miguel De La Torre, John Rutkowski, and Tyler Reinhard.

With the win, La Vernia improves to 4-4 on the season, and the team is 3-0 in district play. The Bears will be back at home this Fri-day, Oct. 30, as they host the 5-3 Pleasanton Eagles, who are 1-2 in district play. The Eagles are coming off a 26-14 loss at Beeville Jones.

Game time between Pleasanton and La Vernia is set for 7:30 p.m. at Bear Stadium.
