Emergency plans

There are some things I just have a hard time forming a picture of in my head. I know the man was just trying to explain emergency plans but I failed to find it reassuring, or for that matter believed it would work.

I was on the first cruise I had ever experienced. We were several hours out from port and doing an evacuation drill. We stood there lined up five rows deep; in front of the lifeboat we would be assigned to. The man in charge of us explained that the lifeboat would hold 150 people seated shoulder to shoulder. It was covered on top by a canvas that would be closed.

Then came the part I had a hard time with. The lifeboat was so designed that even if it filled with water, it wouldn’t sink. I had to stop listening because I was still trying to figure out how 150 of these people I was looking at would fit into one lifeboat, I couldn’t see over most of their heads or around a few. The more I thought about it the less I thought of the whole idea.

Then it dawned on me, Peter walked on water, without a life jacket. For sure that’s what I’d be trying, with a vest. So I was able to put all that stuff out of my head as soon as we got back inside the ship. Sort of.

I learned a lot about myself on that trip. I can still travel by myself. I drove to a town just north of Baton Rouge. I made a two-day trip of that leg of the journey. I actually kind of enjoyed staying alone in the hotel and it gave me time to read my devotional and have a quiet time with the One who goes everywhere with me. And I thanked Him for that extra space he provided every time I had to merge into another lane or onto the Interstate. I guess it was either that or let me scare him trying to do it on my own. We drove to New Orleans the next day and left the Port soon after we boarded ship. We arrived back in New Orleans five days later.

It was an interesting adventure, one I may or may not repeat but I can say I did it. I made the trip home in one day. It’s so true, there is no place like home.

There are still a couple of things I wonder about. If I am the only one that can be seen in the car, could I take the HOV lane in Houston because I know I have a travel companion? And does He smile while I unpack, because He doesn’t have to? I couldn’t have done any of it with out Him, I’m so thankful. Just be sure when you travel to take Him with you.

Have a great week and give God the glory!
