Lady Bears win bi-district, advance to area championship

Lady Bears win bi-district, advance to area championship
Kennedy Adams (20) drops one over the net to help the La Vernia Lady Bears to a bi-district win over Salado this past Monday.

After entering postseason play as the No. 3 seed out of District 26-4A, the La Vernia Lady Bear volleyball team flexed its collective muscle on Monday night, defeating Salado the No. 2 seed from District 25-4A three games to one to win the bi-district championship.

The first game was a competitive one, but the Lady Bears were able to hold the advantage and win by the score of 25-20. The team kept the momentum rolling into the second game, and made things look a bit easier as they took a 2-0 match lead with a win of 25-17.

Salado, which finished second to Liberty Hill in 25-4A play, fought back and won the third game by the score of 25-17. It kept the Lady Eagles alive, and gave their crowd hope moving into game No. 4.

La Vernia and Salado played tight throughout game four, and things couldn’t be settled in the race to 25. Needing to win by 2, the game was pushed a tad further, but the Lady Bears held on for a 26-24 win, giving them the bi-district title, and advancing the team to the area championship.

Mackinley Zimmerle led the offensive effort with 10 kills on the night; followed by Hayli Verrips with 7 kills; and Kennedy Adams, Ashley Frederick, and Addison Mulroney each added another 4. Morgan Burns had 17 assists on the night, and Audrey Mayes was good for another 13. Kady Sczech and Christa Reyes each had three service aces, as well.

Defensively, Verrips was solid with her play at the net, racking up 7.5 blocks for La Vernia. Zimmerle was close behind with 5 total blocks on the night. Reyes led the team in digs with 16.

“I’m proud of these young ladies and their fight,” said Head Coach Theresa Reyes. “Our community did an awesome job in supporting us. It was a great example of what I tell the girls, ’together, as a team, we can do anything.’”

In the next round of postseason play, La Vernia will next square off against either Needville or Wharton, though results of that bi-district matchup were not available as of press time. The area match will be played later this week, and details will be posted online.
