Basketball teams come up short ahead of Thanksgiving break
Members of the La Vernia Lady Bear basketball team come together for a group photo prior to one of their early-season games. The Lady Bears are off to a good start and hold an overall record of 5-3.

Both the Bears and Lady Bears basketball teams had abbreviated schedules leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday, but each came up short and went into the break with a loss.

The Lady Bears traveled to Devine on Nov. 24. La Vernia did what it could to hang in the contest, but was outpaced in each of the four periods of play.

The Arabians doubled up on the Lady Bears in the first period, taking an 11-5 lead after eight minutes of play. Devine went on to score a whopping 25 points in the second period, though the Lady Bears weren’t too far behind with 19 points. As the teams went into halftime, though, the score was 36-24 in favor of the Arabians.

Things slowed way down in the second half, though Devine still held a scoring advantage after dropping in 9 points to La Vernia’s 7. The Arabians tacked on another 12 in the final stanza, while the Lady Bears added 8 to their total. When the final buzzer sounded, it was Devine with the win, 57-39.

Autumn Light led the team with 12 points, followed by Peyton Ford with 8. Ford led the team in rebounds with four.

While the Lady Bears were in Devine, the Bears traveled to San Antonio to play Central Catholic.

La Vernia got off to a slow start in the first period, and Central Catholic ran away with things. While the host team hung 26 on the board, the Bears managed only 2 points. La Vernia picked things up dramatically in the second period as the Bears dropped in 18 points, but Central Catholic scored 22 for a 48-20 halftime lead.

Central Catholic continued to outscore La Vernia in the second half, as the Bears were on the short end of a 15-10 third period and a 13-8 fourth period. At the final buzzer, it was a 76-38 victory for Central Catholic.

Tyler Reinhard and Derek Miller led the Bears with 6 points each, followed by Zach Jarzombek, Brock Roberts, and Major Muenster with 5 points apiece. Jarzombek led the team with 11 rebounds, and Tanner Sims had three steals.

The Lady Bears were scheduled to play Fredericksburg on Nov. 30, and will participate in the New Braunfels Canyon Tournament this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

The Bears were slated to play at Floresville on Dec. 1, and will compete in the Seguin Tournament this weekend.
