Bears rally in fourth period for road win over Floresville
ROBERT C. McDONALD Bear Head Coach Chris Koford (center) gives direction to his team during a first-half timeout in Floresville. The Bears trailed most of the game, but put together a fourth-quarter comeback to win the game.

Despite trailing throughout most of the game in Floresville on Dec. 1, the Bear basketball team fought hard until the final buzzer, and walked away with a thrilling 57-56 win over the Tigers.

The Bears had a definite size advantage in the matchup, but the Tigers were fast and lived off their outside shooting. Floresville applied the press and did what it could to keep the game tempo high, and it worked well early in the game.

The Tigers held a 14-9 lead at the end of the first period. In the second period, the Bears found ways to get the ball into the hands of Zach Jarzombek, and he threw in several points for the Bears. Floresville also got itself into foul trouble, sending several La Vernia players to the free throw line. By halftime, though, the Tigers held a 12-point lead at 35-23.

In the third period, both teams matched the efforts of the other, and the Tigers’ 12-point lead remained. The fourth period, however, was an entirely different story.

The Bears were seemingly scoring at will during the final stanza, as the Tigers struggled to stay in the game. La Vernia chipped away at the Tiger lead and outscored the home team 22-9 during the final eight minutes of play, stunning the home crowd with a 57-56 Bear victory.

Jarzombek led the Bears with 19 points, followed by Brock Roberts with 11 points, and Tanner Sims and Noah Wells with 9 points and 8 points, respectively.

It was the team’s first win of the 2015-16 season, but it was a big one.

The Bears then competed in the Seguin Tournament at the end of the week. The team found mixed results in Seguin, defeating the host team, as well as Class 5A Kennedy High School, but also dropped games to Roosevelt and East Central.

The Bears were scheduled to host Somerset on Dec. 8, and will be at Alamo Heights on Friday, Dec. 11.
