Honorees bring sparkle to annual tree ceremony
GARY DARNELL — Helping switch on the lights to usher in Christmas Dec. 5 in the La Vernia City Park are Frank and Kim Pruski and their family.

The Christmas season has arrived in La Vernia, with the lights twinkling on the community tree in the City Park.

The Greater La Vernia Parks Foundation, in keeping with its longstanding tradition, sponsored its annual Christmas event, with assistance from Red Apple Resources and Cubs Country Child Care. This tradition includes honoring community members for their contributions; honorees help switch on the lights, adding festive cheer to the La Vernia City Park for the whole community to enjoy.

Honorees this year are Frank and Kim Pruski, Jeff Witte of Witte’s Bar-B-Que & Catering, and the late Mike Pryor.

The Greater La Vernia Parks Foundation is proud to honor the memory of Mike Pryor (1956-2015) for his dedication to spreading the Christmas spirit.

Mike was responsible for spreading Christmas cheer at the “Spirit of Christmas” event and many others. Diann, his wife, often joined him.

He served in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1993.

Mike also traveled to Mexico to share his spirit and hand out presents.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Diann; son Tim, and daughter Shannon.

La Vernia Insurance agency owners Frank and Kim Pruski have lived in La Vernia for 25 years and were instrumental in the founding of the Greater La Vernia Parks Foundation. La Vernia Lions Club members for more than 20 years, Frank is a past president and Kim served as secretary and treasurer. They also were San Antonio Livestock and Rodeo ambassadors and are active in the Greater La Vernia Chamber of Commerce. Frank serves on the board of the Wilson County Appraisal District. Married for 31 years, they have four children -- daughter Krista and husband Matthew, and sons Nathan and wife Julie, Craig, and Cullen -- and five grandchildren.

Witte’s Bar-B-Que and Catering has been serving the La Vernia area since 1977. Sonny and Mary Witte established the restaurant, run today by their son, Jeff, and his wife, Shelly. Jeff is an active member of the La Vernia Lions Club and the Greater La Vernia Chamber of Commerce. Evidence of the Wittes’ contribution to the community is visible in the restaurant; buyer’s handkerchiefs from years of La Vernia Stock Shows adorn the walls. The La Vernia Lions Club holds its monthly meetings at the restaurant and local musicians gather there for jam sessions on Wednesday nights. The restaurant supports local events and organizations with raffle prizes, auction participation, and monetary donations.
