Bear basketball team splits games last week

With district play still several weeks away, the La Vernia Bears played two more basketball games last week, hoping each game makes the team better.

The Bears started things off with a home game against Somerset, and La Vernia held on a for a 64-59 win over the Bulldogs.

La Vernia played well from the opening tipoff. The Bears hung 16 points on the Bulldogs in the first period, while Somerset managed just 8 points. La Vernia continued to double up on Somerset in the second stanza, as well, outscoring the visiting team 22-11 in the second period for a solid 38-19 lead at the break.

Head Coach Chris Koford pulled back on his team’s reins a bit in the third, and Somerset climbed back into the game. The Bulldogs outscored the Bears 24-12 in the third period, though La Vernia still held a 50-43 advantage.

The fourth was the tightest played period of the night, and Somerset actually outscored La Vernia, but only by 2 points, which wasn’t enough to overcome the Bear lead. When the final buzzer sounded, it was the home team with a 64-59 win.

Zach Jarzombek led the team down in the paint with 13 points, while Brock Roberts knocked down a trio of 3-pointers en route to his 12 points scored. Dillon Bellino also scored 12.

On Dec. 11, the Bears traveled to Alamo Heights to do battle with the Mules. Unfortunately for La Vernia, Alamo Heights proved to be a much stronger opponent than Somerset.

Alamo Heights took control of the game early and never really looked back. The Mules led the Bears 14-8 after the first period of play and took a 31-16 lead into the locker room.

The Bears and Mules traded points in the third, and La Vernia held a slight scoring advantage, but Alamo Heights still had a 14-point lead. The Mules went on to have their best scoring period of the night in the fourth, adding another 19 to the board, while the Bears put up another 11. When time expired in the contest, it was the Mules with a solid 59-37 win over La Vernia.

Jarzombek was once again the Bears’ leading scorer with 14 points, and Derek Miller dropped in 9. The remainder of the points were spread thin over several players including Roberts, Bellino, Noah Wells, Tanner Sims, Cody Martinez, and Major Muenster.

La Vernia was scheduled to have a rematch with Somerset on Dec. 15, and the Bears will be in Poth this Friday, Dec. 18, to take on the Pirates. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
