City bids farewell to Marie Gerlich
La Vernia Mayor Pro Tem Marie Gerlich and Councilman Eloi Cormier review paperwork during a city council meeting in July. Marie passed away last week.

For the second time in a little more than two years, the city of La Vernia has bade farewell to a sitting council member.

Marie Gerlich, who had served on the La Vernia City Council on and off for 4-1/2 years, passed away Dec. 15 in San Antonio.

A graduate of La Vernia High School, Marie returned to La Vernia to teach after college, ultimately giving more than 30 years to the La Vernia Independent School District as a teacher, principal, and assistant superintendent for curriculum.

Retirement didn’t change her pace, as she poured herself into volunteering with St. Ann Catholic Church, the La Vernia Historical Association, and the city of La Vernia.

A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, her favorite role was Nana to her seven grandchildren.

“Marie was the ultimate public servant, whether as a schoolteacher, an administrator, or on city council,” said La Vernia Mayor Robert Gregory. “She was thorough and fair. And such a visible part of the community always. It will be strange not to see her around town.

“I will always cherish her friendship and wisdom,” he added. “She always wanted to see the best in people come out.”
