Bears, Lady Bears play in Boerne Tournament

After a week off for Christmas, the La Vernia varsity boys and girls teams were back in action this week, as they traveled to Boerne for one last regular-season tournament.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Bears began tournament play against Boerne Champion, but fell by the score of 60-52. Next up was Antonian Prep, and the Lady Bears stumbled once more. La Vernia trailed 29-23 at the break, but things really fell apart in the second half as Antonian scored 28 third-period points and went on to a 67-46 win over the Lady Bears.

On the guys’ side, things went a little better on the first day of play. The Bears started the tournament against S.A. Christian, and earned a 63-56 win over the Lions.

La Vernia also played Cornerstone on the first day of the tournament, and turned in a great performance to win 67-66 in overtime.

Both the Bears and Warriors scored 20 points during the first eight minutes of the game, but Cornerstone outpaced La Vernia 14-10 in the second stanza for a 34-30 advantage. The Bears outscored the Warriors 15-14 in the third to narrow the lead to 3, and then came through in the final period to outscore Cornerstone 12-9 to tie the game and send it into overtime. The Bears outscored the Warriors 10-9 in the overtime period for the 1-point win at 67-66.

Noah Wells led the Bears with 13 points, followed by Tanner Sims and Zach Jarzombek with 11 points apiece.

The teams were scheduled to continue play on Dec. 29, though results were unavailable as of press time. Both the Bears and Lady Bears will be back at home this Saturday, Jan. 2, as they host the Navarro teams in District 26-4A play.
