Be safe when using fireworks

With no current restrictions on fireworks use in Wilson County, many area residents will make pyrotechnics a part of their New Year’s Eve celebration.

Those who wish to purchase and detonate fireworks should do so in a safe manner. Here are some tips from the National Council on Fireworks Safety:

¢Wear safety glasses when using fireworks

¢Have a “designated shooter” to organize and shoot the family fireworks show

¢Those who are consuming alcoholic beverages should stay away from fireworks.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission offers these suggestions:

¢Keep a bucket of water nearby to pour on fireworks that fail to ignite or explode. Discard any malfunctioning fireworks.

¢Do not allow young children to play with fireworks; supervise older children and teens closely

¢Set off fireworks in an open area, away from buildings, dry leaves or grass, and other flammable material.

Remember, be safe, but also be legal. While Wilson County has not banned fireworks, possession of fireworks within city limits is forbidden by all the incorporated entities within the county.

Report illegal fireworks use to your local fire department or law enforcement. Keep emergency numbers handy.
