La Vernia came away with a much-needed road win Jan. 15 when they downed the Canyon Lake High School Lady Hawks 45-37. Head Coach Mandie West’s squad played tough and smart throughout the game. The Lady Bears took advantage of their visits to the free-throw line, earning 16 points off of 28 attempts. The team was also stifling on defense, causing 21 turnovers on 22 steals.
Autumn Light was once again one of the leading offensive players for La Vernia. The senior tallied 11 points, the bulk of which came from her dead-eye three-point shooting. Light was 3 for 8 from beyond the arc. Freshman Heaven Muenster was the second-leading scorer on the team with 8 points, going 4 of 8 from the charity stripe.
Junior Jordan Luensmann also contributed significantly to the Lady Bears’ cause by scoring 6 points, 5 of which came via free throws. Sophomore Lily Janek and Muenster tied for the team lead in rebounds, with each pulling in 7 total boards.
The win brings the Lady Bears to 10-16 overall this season. They were on the road in Yoakum Tuesday and will finish the week’s schedule on Friday at home against visiting Gonzales High School.
