Bears flex their muscles in key district win
MIKE STAHL/LVMemories — Senior Zach Jarzombek towers over the Gonzales defenders Jan. 22, as the La Vernia Bears defeated the visiting Apaches at home.

Head Coach Chris Koford’s team got out to a fast start against the visiting Gonzales Apaches Jan. 22 and never looked back, with a resounding 68-32 win.

The Bears jumped out to a 24-6 first quarter lead and were relentless in their offensive attack. The home team was deadly from three-point range and in driving to the basket, which was all part of Koford’s game plan.

“That’s been a part of the game plan all year; it’s just finally been coming into fruition,” explained Koford. “Having that come into effect and having the people on the floor step up and play aggressive like I needed them to.”

Off the bench, junior Brock Roberts was deadeye accurate from behind the arc as he led La Vernia in scoring with 15 points overall. Guard Noah Wells was also very effective on the offensive; the senior scored 13 points and was the second-leading scorer on the night.

“I think our pressure really got to them,” Koford said. “We executed really well; we shot the ball really well. It was a good time, the last game in the first round of district, to get everybody some playing time. We were able to score pretty easily inside and out.”

The Bears’ bench was stellar and every member of the team scored. With the large lead, the second-unit players on the team all received extensive playing time. It was a total team effort for La Vernia on both sides of the ball.

“I played everybody a lot the last game and we’re gonna need them,” Koford said. “There are gonna be some games coming down the wire here and we’re gonna need to play some good minutes ... . It was good to have a game like this one, where they can have those minutes and get some confidence on the floor. They’re here because they can play and it’s exciting to see everybody get the opportunity to be successful.”

The Bears are 12-11 overall.

They went on the road Tuesday night against Navarro. La Vernia will close the week at home against Cuero this Friday.
