Boosters celebrate athletes, coaches at sports banquet
Mark Dodge, guest speaker

The La Vernia Sports Booster Club hosted the Fall Sports Banquet at the La Vernia Chamber of Commerce on Jan. 30. The purpose was to take time to recognize the fall sports coaching staff and athletes by team.

The fall banquet honored the following teams: cross country, team tennis, cheerleading, volleyball, and football. There were more than 360 in attendance, including high school athletes, coaches, administration, and parents. Pastor Bobby Nixon of Hope Church provided the invocation.

Mark Dodge was the guest speaker. Mark is a former U.S. Army Honor Guard member who was at the Pentagon during the 9/11 attacks. Upon completing his military service, Mark pursued a lifelong dream of playing college football. He had a very inspirational story about serving others, overcoming challenges, and persevering. “Fear is part of life,” he said. “It will be in every day you live from now until death. Embrace it.” Humility resonated in his words to the crowd, “Never talk down to anyone and always pick those up that fail, because the next time it may be you.” Mark had the crowd’s attention from the beginning and received a standing ovation from the appreciative audience.

The varsity team members were recognized with certificates for their athletic and academic accomplishments. Additionally, the head coach for each team selected a team member for the following awards:

¢Character and Effort: Tate Gregory and Isabel De La Fuente, cross country; Ethan Royal, team tennis; Lauren Flores, cheerleading; Morgan Burns, volleyball; and Samuel Thompson, football

¢Leadership: Gage Brandt and Elizabeth Moczygemba, cross country; Bria Peters, team tennis, Abby Secrest, cheerleading; Mackinley Zimmerle, volleyball; and Reagan Tucker, football

¢Most Valuable Player: Aubrey Stewart and Allison Newberg, cross country; Blaine Peters, team tennis; Samantha Dorsey, cheerleading; Christa Reyes, volleyball; and Koby Bullard, football.

Coach Brandon Layne presented Coach Pete Gibbons with a commemorative football and thanked him for his outstanding career and influence while coaching at La Vernia High School. The varsity football team presented Coach Layne with a signed football yard sign and thanked him for his leadership and dedication.

The evening concluded with a video montage set to music featuring athletes from all fall varsity sport teams, courtesy of Dan Sherrard, booster club treasurer.
