La Vernia track dominates Mathis

La Vernia track dominates Mathis
Coach William Barnes poses with members of the La Vernia boys track team during the March 10 Pirate Relays in Mathis with members of the girls track team executing a textbook photobomb in the background.

Domination was the word of the day for the La Vernia Bears. Both the junior varsity and varsity boys track teams dominated the Pirate Relays in Mathis March 10.

The JV boys claimed the top spot in the 4x200 relay with a winning time of 1:37.58, and an equally impressive showing in the 4x400 relay with a winning time of 3:44.85. These times were personal bests to date for each of these squads.

Joel Madrigal (800-meter run), Garrett Czarnek (400-meter run), and Matt Helinski (300-meter hurdles) also had dominating performances to finish in the top spots in their respective races.

The JV boys finished in the top spot overall with 125 points; second place was Taft High School with 89, and Skidmore-Tynnan finished in the third spot with 63 points in the team totals. (Due to heavy rain, field events were cancelled).

The domination continued at the varsity level with the Bears taking the top honors as team champion, scoring 112 points. Mathis came in second with 76.5. Corpus Christi Miller finished third at 73.5, Karnes City fourth at 62, and Taft finished out the top five with 51 points.

The boys 100-meter relay started things off on the right track for the evening with the team by posting a personal best time of 43.69, which put them among the elite times in this event for the 4A division.

The boys 400-meter relay ended the night with an incredible finish in the last race of the evening. Michael Wong got the baton for the last leg, trailing by 20-plus meters, only to make up that distance and make an impressive pass to take the lead in the final 80 meters.

Other top performances for the night included Zach Gastauer in both the 110 and the 300-meter hurdles, with personal best times in each of these two events.

Ryel Leija gave an incredible performance in his two appearances for the evening in the 3200M run and the 1600M run, which gave the team the momentum to go ahead and finish off the competition and allow the Bears to be named 2016 Pirate Relay Champions.
