Construction has begun on the La Vernia Veterans Memorial, which will recognize honorably discharged veterans who live in the La Vernia area, in addition to those who have family and friends who live near, or who have a special place in their heart for La Vernia.
The La Vernia Historical Association is constructing the memorial at the La Vernia City Park. It is not too late to order a veteran’s name on the wall for $50. Once the walls are erected, it will be necessary to increase the price of the inscriptions to $150 because on-site labor is more costly.
Supporters may also order 4-inch-by-8-inch personalized bricks for $60 or 8-inch-by-8-inch bricks for $250 on the Patriot’s Pathway, a sidewalk leading to the memorial. The pathway bricks may be purchased by anyone as memorials or in honor of individuals, families, newborns, anniversaries, businesses, weddings, and more.
The five granite walls on the memorial will be inscribed with veterans’ names only. The memorial will have 10 benches, which may be engraved with the names of veterans. The cost of engraving one side of a bench is $2,500. Additionally, a 21-inch-high obelisk at the center of the memorial is another opportunity for generous donations. The names of large donors will be engraved on a donor-recognition plaque.
The LVHA is raising money for the memorial through fund-raisers, donations, and grants, as well as brick, bench, and obelisk supporters. Wall inscription fees are strictly at cost, so the association welcomes all donations to the project. Construction phases will proceed as funding levels are reached.
The La Vernia Historical Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit which operates the La Vernia Heritage Museum. The Veterans Memorial Board welcomes opportunities to speak about the project at local meetings or gatherings by calling 830-779-2461. Order forms for inscriptions and bricks are available at laverniahistory.com, La Vernia City Hall, and the La Vernia Heritage Museum.
