Where will your ambulance be based in future?

Could La Vernia residents receive emergency medical services provided by a Stockdale-based entity in the future? An informative meeting for taxpayers in the La Vernia Emergency Medical Services coverage area was among topics discussed during an April 8 meeting of the Wilson County Emergency Services District No. 3 in Stockdale. As of April 8, an annexation petition had not been submitted to the District No. 3 board for consideration.

District 3 President Carlos Salazar explained after the meeting, “it would be in the best interest of the people é to present the petition and let us get started [with the process],” he said. “The petition is a small step” in the process, Salazar said. Educating the public is important.

Salazar was responding to a question about a petition apparently circulating in the La Vernia and Sutherland Springs areas regarding emergency medical services in those communities.

If an annexation petition is submitted to the Stockdale-based emergency services district, a formal process would begin that includes town hall meetings and an election. If approved, ESD No. 3 Emergency Medical Services, based in Stockdale, could stage an ambulance in La Vernia, to reduce the estimated time of arrival for emergency calls.

Also, if the matter is approved, residents of that district will incur an ad valorem tax of up to 10 cents per $100 of assessed property value, to be used solely to fund emergency medical services. Currently, the rate is the lowest of the three emergency districts in Wilson County, set at 8.45 cents per $100 of assessed value.

The area of potential annexation for emergency medical services comprises the service area of Emergency Services District No. 1, served by the La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department.

Interested parties are welcome to attend a board meeting or ask to be placed on the District 3 agenda for discussion of this subject with the board members. Visit for meeting information.
