Area road users may have witnessed something different while traveling between St. Hedwig and La Vernia last week, as Allie Stevens conveyed his rickshaw along F.M. 1346.
Stevens, of Oceanside, Calif., is attempting a world-record rickshaw road trip, heading for Miami, Fla.
He and his girlfriend, Ulli Turner of Germany, and his dog, Roxy, sojourned in La Vernia, seeing in the New Year as guests of Reuben Garcia and his wife, Barbara. The Taste of Chicago owners opened a home they’re remodeling to the travelers during their brief stay.
Stevens, a former U.S. Marine, is seeking small-town America and sharing his faith and positive message while traveling.
“This is a real ‘walk by faith,’” said the Vietnam War veteran, who left California with 10 cents in his pocket Sept. 13, 2009. “This is to show the world that God is really strong in this country and to know that wherever we are, God will be there. God’s everywhere.”
He has found people along the way to be generous and caring, helping him when he needs it. It’s no different in La Vernia, where Stevens’ rickshaw is being repaired by Mike Lopez, a friend of the Garcias.
The “Rickshaw Man” will resume his journey Jan. 6, headed to Seguin, then down Alt. U.S. 90 to Houston, and along the Gulf Coast to Florida. Follow him online at www.rickshawroadtrip.com.
