The La Vernia Intermediate School and La Vernia High School Odyssey of the Mind teams are state champions, earning them the opportunity to compete at the Odyssey of the Mind World Competition, where they will compete against teams from other states and countries. Odyssey of the Mind is a problem-solving competition for students based on creativity and teamwork. These two teams have spent months creating solutions to long-term problems, all with no adult assistance.
The intermediate team represented Problem Five Division I, “Fins, Furs, Feathers, and Friends.” The team’s problem was to create and present a humorous performance depicting problem solving from the perspective of three different animals. The high school team represented Problem Two Division III, “Something Fishy,” designing and operating a technical solution that simulated multiple styles of fishing.
Both teams are looking forward to exploring the creative items and solutions created by other teams around the world. The kids are also excited about meeting and communicating with children from foreign locations, such as England, Russia, Singapore, and Mexico, to name a few. Additionally, they can’t wait to trade Odyssey Pins with kids from other states and across the globe.
The teams’ favorite part of Odyssey has been creating long-term solutions and being able to perform their problems in front of the judges, family, and friends. The kids also enjoy working with their friends on a peer-to-peer level writing story lines and building props.
