Community, veterans remember honorable sacrifice
ELAINE STEPHENS/Courtesy Vice Commander of the St. Hedwig American Legion Post 539 John Hafner and retired U.S. Navy Capt. Walter Scull, chairman of the La Vernia Veterans Memorial Board, visit during the May 29 Memorial Day Ceremony.

The American Legion Post No. 539 in St. Hedwig held a Memorial Day ceremony on May 29, in the American Legion Hall. La Vernia Veterans Memorial representatives were in attendance to provide information about the memorial, which will be built in the La Vernia City Hall and will honor qualified veterans.

The ceremony was accompanied by the “County Line Community Band” playing patriotic music and guest speaker Legionnaire Eddie Stolowski. A special ceremony to honor the POWs and MIAs included a formal table set in their honor with the post’s honor guard performing slow respectful salutes and the turning over of the goblets at the table. A gun salute and the playing of “taps” also commemorated the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces who now rest in peace.

The La Vernia Veterans Memorial is a project of the La Vernia Historical Association. For more information, visit laverniahistory.com.
