The La Vernia Independent School District has a $24.9 million budget for 2016-17
Trustees approved the proposed balanced budget June 23, during a special meeting following a public hearing on the budget.
Next year’s budget includes $19.6 million in payroll costs.
A tax rate has yet to be approved to support the budget. However, district administrators are proposing a rate of $1.366, a decrease of almost 1 cent from the present rate of $1.375. The board of trustees will approve a tax rate in August.
The base salary for new teachers in the La Vernia district will now be $45,000, up from $43,110. This was included in a salary and stipend scale for 2016-17 approved by the trustees; all auxiliary positions will have a base salary equating to $10 per hour. The stipend for master’s-degreed teachers will be $1,500.
“This all sounds very positive,” trustee James Barnett said.
“This will help us recruit and retain quality employees,” Dr. Josť Moreno said after the meeting.
Trustees also voted to extend Moreno’s contract as superintendent by another year to three years, with a 1.5-percent salary increase.
