Most of the time when we hear Little League, we think of little kids, 7 or 8 years old, right? Did you know there is a Little League “Big League” composed of players who are 18 and under?
La Vernia has such a team, which is made up of players from Floresville and Poth, as well as a majority from La Vernia. The team won its first game of the district tournament on June 29 with an 11-0 perfect game, 10-run-rule shutout of Luling.
Two La Vernia pitchers combined to throw the perfect no-hitter. Gunner Semlinger -- the “G-Man” -- went for 3-2/3 innings, facing 11 batters, striking out seven.
The “G-Man” was relieved by Dakota Hurley, a hard-throwing left-hander who faced the final four Luling batters and set them down in order.
The last game the La Vernia team played was June 30, again in Luling, against Nixon. La Vernia won 5-3 in a back-and-forth affair.
The team advances to the July 18-20 Southwest Region Big League Tournament, being hosted in La Vernia.
