The La Vernia baseball team was eliminated in the second round of the July 18-21 Big League Regional Championship held in La Vernia.
In the first round, La Vernia lost to the team from Montgomery, which ended up winning the Regional title for the second consecutive year. In the second inning -- with the score tied at 1-1, Montgomery at bat, two outs, two strikes on the batter -- Gunner Semlinger, La Vernia’s starter, suffered a torn UCL in his pitching arm and had to leave the game for the emergency room.
The loss of their starter took the wind out of La Vernia’s sails and, with a team the caliber of Montgomery, your heart and mind have to be in the game every play. The bats and defense of Montgomery overwhelmed the La Vernia boys and Montgomery won, 15-2.
In the second round, La Vernia lost a close one to the team from Laredo by a score of 2-1 in eight innings and was eliminated. Laredo played Montgomery in the championship game and lost, 15-0.
