It looks really good on paper

I have known a lot of people in my lifetime, all kinds of people. It’s so interesting meeting someone new to the area. Some don’t want to talk about themselves at all and others will be more than willing to tell you much more than you’d ever want, and certainly ever need, to know. One of my favorite questions to ask is, “What brought you to this area?” I find this interesting because I know how I wound up here. And I can tell you in a heartbeat, God must have wanted me here.

I drove through La Vernia in 1979 going to Victoria; it was late and there was nothing open and no one visible on the streets. A fog was setting in. I made some remark about the sidewalks being rolled up when the sun went down. We moved here in 1981. There’s a lot more to the story and space won’t allow for it. One thing I can tell you, it’s the best move we ever made.

I hadn’t attended a church regularly for many years and we weren’t here long before two ladies came to visit me and invite me to their church. My life began changing, for the better, when I accepted their invitation and it’s never been the same since. It wasn’t long before I moved my quite inactive membership and learned how active membership blesses us.

I think some people, with the best of intentions, join a church and after a few weeks stop attending. Yet these same people when asked will tell you they’re a member of a particular church. I’ve known some who considered it a character reference; after all, they’re listed as members. It shouldn’t matter that they know nothing about what’s going on at the church, they don’t have time to get involved in a lot of committees and such. And certainly they have enough to do to manage their own lives and no time to lend a hand when someone needs help.

It’s kind of like joining an Antisocial Disorder Support group that never meets. Your name may be on the list but you have no active association to deal with. Yet your name on the list makes you a member.

First Baptist Church has a Members list and just as important there is an Attenders list. They all work together and enjoy great fellowship. I think they can do this so well because they all know that the most important place for your name to be written is in God’s book.

We would like to invite you to visit with us on Sunday mornings for one of the two worship services, one at 8:10 a.m. and one at 10:45 a.m. Learn more about us at www.fbc-people.com; you’ll find scheduled activities listed and if you need to know more or have no Internet access just call 830-253-1239 and someone will be happy to answer any questions.

Have a great week and give God the glory!
