LA VERNIA It was another week with split results for the La Vernia Lady Bear basketball team, as the girls fell in a close game with Sam Houston 48-39, but then responded with a convincing 52-28 win over Gonzales.
The Lady Bears traveled to San Antonio Jan. 10, and put on a good showing against a quality district opponent. La Vernia led the game 16-10 after the first eight minutes of play, and went into the locker room with a 25-19 advantage at the half.
The tide began to turn in the second half, though, as Sam Houston outscored La Vernia 11-7 in the third period. As play began in the fourth, the Lady Bears clung to a narrow 32-30 lead.
The struggles continued for La Vernia in the final period, and Sam Houston had its best scoring quarter of the game, outperforming the Lady Bears to the tune of 18-7. The Lady Hurricanes picked up the district win by the final score of 48-39.
“This is a tough loss to handle because we had an opportunity to beat a quality district opponent on the road,” said Lady Bear Head Coach Ron Glazener Jr. “The majority of our turnovers were in the fourth quarter, which is something you can’t do against a good team.
“We’ll have to regroup and get after Gonzales who will be a challenge for us,” he added. “Our staff believes we can bounce back and put up a great effort on Friday night.”
With Tuesday night’s game behind them, the Lady Bears set their sights on Gonzales, and moved quickly to redeem themselves.
La Vernia came out strong in the first period and opened up a 15-8 lead by the end of one. The team continued to apply pressure to Gonzales, and the Lady Apaches were held to just 8 points again in the second period. Meanwhile, La Vernia added 12 points to its points total, and led 27-16 at the half.
The scoring prowess continued into the second half for the Lady Bears, as La Vernia outscored Gonzales 11-7 in the third period, and 14-5 in the fourth. When time expired, it was all La Vernia, winning 52-28.
With the win, the Lady Bears improved to 11-13 on the season, and the team is now 4-2 in District 28-3A play. La Vernia was scheduled to host Pleasanton Jan. 17, and will travel to Cuero on Friday, Jan. 20, to take on the Lady Gobblers.
