Lady Bears crush Wimberley in first district match
MARK WALTON/waltonpics.smugmug.com — Lady Bears Brianna Woitaske (10) and Kennedy Adams (21) put up a wall to block a Wimberley spike Sept. 27 in La Vernia. The Lady Bears won the district match, 25-14, 25-14, and 25-13.

The Lady Bear volleyball team put on a great show for excited fans Sept. 27 during the first district match of the season, pulling off a three-set win against the Wimberley Lady Texans, 25-14, 25-14, and 25-13.

The crowd inside La Vernia’s gym went crazy before the game even started, particularly the student section, cheering and chanting, “LV! LV!” as each of the Lady Bears was introduced. With their huge winning streak leading up to district play, the team had certainly earned this enthusiasm.

The Lady Texans weren’t intimidated, however, and sent over an ace on the first serve of the game. La Vernia responded in kind, with a Morgan Burns to Hayli Verrips kill, followed by an ace by Chloe Patton.

Wimberley remained hot on their heels for a while, but La Vernia’s teamwork, skills, and consistency were ultimately too much for them. Kennedy Adams and Patton led on points, putting several aces and kills on the scoreboard to bring the final score for the first set to 25-14.

During the second set, the Lady Texans again started strong, tying the score six times and pulling ahead once. Errors on both sides resulted in Wimberley taking an early lead at 3-2, until a point off of a block by Verrips and Adams, followed by a nice tip from Alyssa Johnson, shifted the momentum back to the Lady Bears.

The Lady Texans kept coming back for more, but several kills from Patton, along with several diving digs from Kayla Homeyer, kept them at bay for a while. Wimberley’s defense began to clamp down on Patton, however, and they caught up one last time at 11-11. At this point, the Lady Bears decided they’d had enough, pulling away for good with two kills by Adams and Verrips and an ace by Burns. The match ended at 25-14, after an exciting match point bout.

The third set started off with a hard Lady Texan serve, which was intercepted with an action movie dive-and-roll dig by Christa Reyes and sent back to where it came from with a kill by Verrips. However, three La Vernia errors in a row had Wimberley up 3-1.

It looked like Wimberley might take the set, as every time the Lady Bears caught up, the Lady Texans would pull away again. Eventually, points from Johnson, Addison Mulroney, and Adams caught the La Vernia up at 8-8, and a roof by Verrips and Adams put them on top for good.

Patton, Adams, Verrips, and Brianna Woitaske put some more points on the board, and, with the score at 20-12, the student section stood up in the stands. This must have intimidated the Lady Texans, as the next three points went to La Vernia due to errors. An ace by Homeyer brought the score to match point, and, with the audience’s fingers raised in the air, the Lady Bears won the final point off of one last Wimberley error, 25-13.

La Vernia went on to win their Sept. 30 match against the Gonzales Apaches, 25-7, 25-8, and 25-6, bringing their district record to 2-0. The Lady Bears have also moved up one notch on the Texas Girls Coaches Association State Poll to No. 6 in Texas.

They took on the Austin Eastside Memorial Lady Panthers Oct. 4 in La Vernia, and will go up against the Lady Panthers Oct. 7 in Navarro.
