The La Vernia Bears opened their district schedule with a 58-14 win over the Robstown Cottonpickers on Friday, Oct. 7, in La Vernia.

La Vernia won the coin toss, but deferred the kickoff to Robstown. The Cottonpickers worked their way down to the 19-yard line, but the Bears forced a fumble and recovered the ball. A 2-yard run by Wyatt Cowsert and then a 64-yard touchdown run by Parker Beck put the Bears up 7-0.
Robstown immediately responded with a 75-yard passing touchdown of their own, to tie the score, 7-7. The Bears received the ensuing kickoff and worked down the field in seven plays. Beck crossed the goal line again from 12 yards out to put La Vernia ahead, 14-7.

The Bears forced another fumble on the Cottonpickers, with La Vernia’s Hayden Johnson pouncing on the ball at the 4-yard line. A Robstown penalty put the Bears on the 1-yard line, where Beck punched the ball in again.

The next Cottonpicker possession started at their 14-yard line, and the Bears pushed them back to the 2. They sacked Robstown’s Quarterback in the end zone for a safety, putting them at 23-7.

The Robstown kick was picked up by John Hernandez at the 50, who weaved his way through the Cottonpickers for another touchdown. La Vernia finished the first quarter with a 30-7 lead.

The second quarter began with the Bears’ defense holding strong, but they were unable to capitalize, due to a missed field goal opportunity. La Vernia’s second possession of the quarter was more successful, when Beck scored his fourth touchdown of the night on a 13-yard run with 43 seconds left in the half. Robstown moved the ball quickly at the end of the half and scored their own touchdown as the half ended with the Bears leading, 37-14.

La Vernia quarterback Matthew Helinski scored a rushing touchdown early in the third quarter and hooked up with wide receiver Zach Scott on a 49-yard touchdown pass late in the quarter to extend the lead to 51-14.

Coach Grubb replaced many of his skill positions on offense for the final quarter. That didn’t stop the Bear offense, eating up over 7 minutes as they marched down the field to score another touchdown on a 1-yard run by Derrik Barnhardt. This pushed the Bears to a 58-14 final score.

With this win, the Bears move to 1-5 overall, and 1-0 in district play. La Vernia travels to Beeville to take on the Jones Trojans this Friday, with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
